What Lonza’s upgraded growth target and capex plan actually committed to
Peptide Test SupplierGenetic PeptidesLonza’s October 2026 guidance commits to capital spending at a percentage of sales, not to a volume of capacity available on a date. The company set a mid-term ambition of “low-teens (10-13%) organic CER sales growth on average over time” and reiterated 11 тиклем 12% CER sales growth for full-year 2026 against an expected 2 тиклем 3% FX headwind (Lonza’s October 2026 Capital Markets Day release, 2026-10-14). Organic CapEx is expected to fluctuate around mid-to-high teens percentage of sales, unchanged from the existing CDMO Organic Growth Model.
The actuals show the taper already running. Lonza spent CHF 1.3 billion on capex in 2025, equal to 19.6% of sales, while gradually reducing its CapEx intensity (Lonza’s full-year 2025 results, 2026-01-28). H1 2026 capex was CHF 0.5 billion, йәки 15.7% of sales, with the full year expected in the mid-range of mid-to-high teens and phasing into 2027 (Lonza’s half-year 2026 report, 2026-07-22). The forward band is unchanged; the spending level is falling toward it.
The release contains no statement that growth is constrained by capacity timing rather than demand. It speaks of “maturing high-return growth projects” and execution (Lonza’s October 2026 Capital Markets Day release). Reading the capex taper as a capacity signal is an inference from the phasing and the project start dates, not a Lonza claim, and it should be treated that way in any supplier conversation.
What the Moderna–Lonza Geleen arrangement signals about dedicated versus shared capacity
The Geleen line is dedicated customer capacity, and it is mRNA drug substance, not peptide API. был 2 June 2021 announcement covers drug substance for COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna, adding “up to an additional 300 million doses per year” at 50 µg, with operations expected by the end of 2021 (the 2021 Geleen drug-substance announcement, 2021-06-02). It extends a ten-year collaboration announced in May 2020 with three lines at Visp and one at Portsmouth, plus three further Visp lines added in April 2021.
The signal for peptide CDMO capacity is structural, not literal. Mega-CDMOs build against named commercial customers and multi-line commitments, and Geleen was sited to leverage existing infrastructure for “fast build-out and ramp-up” (the 2021 Geleen drug-substance announcement). Geleen is also Lonza’s cell-and-gene and mRNA/LNP process and analytical development site, with more than 30,000 sq ft of lab, cGMP and office space (Lonza’s mRNA manufacturing page, датаһы юҡ).
А 2025 annual report confirming a qualified facility does not establish the date when qualification first occurred. The cited records therefore cannot support a measured 2021-to-2025 qualification delay or a default wait for small sponsors. Request the site’s actual qualification status and available campaign dates.
Scope correction:Geleen is mRNA drug substance for one product. It is not peptide API and not fill-finish, and the 300 million dose figure does not generalize to other modalities or dose levels.
Does announced CDMO capacity equal bookable capacity
Юҡ. Announced litres become bookable only after qualification, method readiness, staffing and scheduling clear, and each gate has its own clock. CordenPharma is advancing more than EUR 1 billion in peptide investment, including an additional 30,000 L of solid-phase peptide synthesis capacity; its Colorado site adds 25,000 L to reach more than 42,000 L by 2028, and Muttenz targets qualification before end-2027 with commercial activity from H1 2028 (CordenPharma’s announced peptide build-out, 2025-04-03). Neuland committed $30 million to DSC automated systems of 6.37 KL with Module I due H1 2026, and SK pharmteco $260 million for eight production trains in Sejong (DCAT’s TIDES expansion roundup, 2025).
Published utilization and lead-time ranges depend on the provider, survey, development stage and scope. They do not establish an industry-wide waiting period for a specific sequence; request a dated quotation covering transfer, manufacture and analytical release.
Two CDMOs independently committing to 2027 һәм 2028 completions is the strongest cross-source signal available. Lonza’s own projects follow the same pattern: a large-scale drug product facility now expected to start in 2028 and a Stein aseptic ADC filling line announced for 2030 (Lonza’s half-year 2026 report). The litre figure in a press release is not your slot. It is a reactor that must be qualified, staffed and scheduled, and the gap between announcement and usable capacity runs two to four years.
What a small peptide sponsor must bring to technology transfer
Bring a package that answers the receiving site’s questions before the intake call, because no standard dossier exists to fall back on. ICH Q10, Аҙым 4 dated 4 June 2008, states that “the goal of technology transfer activities is to transfer product and process knowledge between development and manufacturing, and within or between manufacturing sites to achieve product realisation” (ICH Q10 section 3.1.2, 2008-06-04). The same guideline prescribes no universal transfer dossier, no fixed number of validation batches and no fixed list of deliverables; the package is defined by sponsor and CDMO under the quality system.
For peptide tech transfer, the control points carry the most weight. Coupling completeness, deprotection and cleavage behaviour, crude impurity burden, preparative purification loadability, and counter-ion and salt form with final isolation are where scale changes bite, and purification often becomes the real bottleneck once material quantity increases (general large-scale synthesis practice). Each field should arrive with the data behind it, not a summary.
The contractual layer is equally concrete. FDA’s quality-agreement guidance for contract manufacturing (Final, November 2016) covers how parties “delineate their manufacturing activities to ensure compliance with CGMP” (FDA’sReconstituted Peptidesquality-agreement guidance for contract manufacturing, 2016-11). Transfer, testing and release allocation is a written obligation, so the package you send and the agreement you sign should name the same deliverables.
How we apply this at MOL Changes, the publisher of this guide. Our peptide CRO work includes process development and technical support, which covers the part of technology transfer where a receiving team works through synthesis, purification and analytical questions with the sponsor before the intake call. What we cannot do is guarantee the receiving site’s qualification, method re-qualification or scheduling outcome: those gates belong to the site you transfer into, and you still assemble and defend the transfer package yourself, with any supplier, ours included.
How method comparability is defined after a site, scale or equipment change
Method comparability is not established by running the same procedure at a new site; it is established by re-qualifying the receiving laboratory against defined performance characteristics. I С2.(R2.), һөҙөмтәле 14 June 2024, applies to new or revised analytical procedures for release and stability testing of drug substances, requires justification when prior knowledge is used, and allowsPeptide Product Supplierabbreviated validation for platform procedures if scientifically justified (I С2.(R2.), effective June 2024, EMA page updated 2026-02-20). Peptide Solutions
For method transfer, determine whether comparative testing, partial revalidation, co-validation or a justified transfer waiver is appropriate. Q2(R2.) discusses lifecycle considerations including transfer; USP 1224 provides additional transfer guidance. Not every transfer requires repeating every validation characteristic.
The comparability framework most often cited for process changes is older and narrower than the analytical standard beside it. ICH Q5E, legally effective 1 June 2005, provides principles for assessing comparability of biotechnological and biological products before and after a manufacturing process change, and is framed for products derived from biotechnology rather than chemically synthesised peptides (ICH Q5E, the comparability framework for biological products, 2005-06-01). A post-change package therefore rests on a 2005 framework while its supporting procedures are validated under a 2024 one. Keep purity, measured as relative area percent by HPLC, distinct from identity, which needs orthogonal confirmation such as mass spectrometry plus a second technique, and from content and counterion form.
How batch scheduling works for a small program competing with commercial demand
Those ranges are quoted figures, not guarantees, and they assume the analytical package is ready. No verified public benchmark exists for reservation fees, minimum batch sizes or cancellation terms at large peptide CDMOs, so treat take-or-pay clauses, minimum-volume commitments and creditable deposits as contract structures to ask about rather than line items to budget from a published number. Campaign size and minimum commitment are the variables that decide whether your program fits a commercial schedule at all.
Кәңәш өсөн:If your phase is early, your modifications are few and your analytical burden is light, a mega-CDMO queue can still work because the transfer is simple. If your molecule carries multiple modifications, non-standard tags or a heavy impurity profile, a specialised peptide partner with shorter lines and dedicated analytical time is usually the faster route, even at a higher per-gram price. Is specialized analytical support scarce, and how does a small sponsor secure it
Analytical and manufacturing schedules may be separate or integrated under the contract. Announced investment does not establish that every slot is committed. Choose a partner from demonstrated technical fit, available capacity and enforceable delivery terms, rather than company size alone.
The lever is the contract, not the relationship. USP’s documented process and FDA’s written obligation meet in the quality agreement: the documentation USP requires a receiving unit to hold is the same documentation FDA expects the contract to allocate (USP <1224> method transfer; FDA’s quality-agreement guidance for contract manufacturing). Name the analytical team, the method IDs and the release panel in that agreement. A workable panel covers mass spectrometry for identity, HPLC for purity, pH, content and endotoxin testing.

Is a large CDMO ever the right choice for a small peptide program?
Эйе, when the program is late-phase, the molecule is close to a standard sequence and the analytical package is already validated. One-stop-shop consolidation is “not universally the best fit” for technically challenging early programs (a CMC leader’s view on the peptide capacity mismatch, датаһы юҡ). Match the partner to the transfer complexity, not to the size of the press release.
I am already mid-transfer at a large CDMO. What should I watch?
Watch the analytical clock separately from the manufacturing clock. Q2(R2.) governs procedure validation and USP <1224> governs the transfer itself, so a validated method and a completed transfer are two deliverables (I С2.(R2.), effective June 2024; USP <1224> method transfer). Confirm both are scheduled before the first GMP batch.
How should I read vendor market forecasts?
As directional ranges from paid estimates, not consensus. Grand View Research’s peptide and oligonucleotide CDMO forecast puts the market at $3.5 billion in 2026 rising to $8.1 billion by 2033, а 12.9% CAGR (Grand View Research’s peptide and oligonucleotide CDMO forecast, датаһы юҡ, base year 2025), while InsightAce’s GLP-1 peptide CDMO forecast gives 12.7% for 2025 тиклем 2034 (InsightAce’s GLP-1 peptide CDMO forecast, 2025-11-14). Each vendor’s business benefits from a large number, so cite one named vendor per figure with its horizon.

Open the supplier conversation with four asks: the qualification date for the specific reactor, the named analytical team and method IDs, the quoted transfer timeline in writing, and the take-or-pay and minimum-volume terms. Those four answers tell you whether the announced capacity is bookable for your program.
