Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 (commercially known as Eyeseryl) is a synthetic bioactive peptide extensively used within the cosmetics industry. Specifically designed to address various skin concerns surrounding the eyes, it is a fundamental component in modern anti-aging products. The molecular structure consists of four amino acid residues, with the acetylation modifications serving to enhance skin permeability and overall stability. A dual mechanism of action is responsible for its demonstrated effects; anti-wrinkle properties, reduction of under-eye puffiness, and significant diminishment of certain types of dark circles. Its established importance in these formulations is well documented.

Research Of Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5

1. Mechanism of Action: Multi-Targeted Efficacy

The comprehensive efficacy of Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 stems from its multi-targeted biological activity. Improving microcirculation and subsequent lymphatic drainage are the first identified mechanisms; inhibition of collagen glycation being the more recently understood pathway.

2. Mechanism 1: Improving Microcirculation and Reducing Edema

A primary physiological cause of eye bags and all related periorbital edema is impaired local microcirculation, increased capillary permeability leading to lymphatic fluid accumulation. Research shows the peptide itself reduces said capillary permeability – angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition being one mechanism of action – promoting enhanced local lymphatic drainage. Eyelid edema and the ‘blood stasis’ associated eye bags and dark circles are thus alleviated.

3. Mechanism 2: Inhibiting Glycation and Preserving Collagen

Glycation is a major contributor to all forms of skin aging; advanced glycation end products (AGEs) degrade the structural integrity of collagen. Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 intervenes in this process to some degree, preserving (to a point) elasticity and all the small structural supports that define firm skin. Dark circles, being a visual manifestation of both glycation and vascular issues, are also improved.

4. Clinical Evidence and Formulation Application

Anti-edema and circulatory effects lead to rapid reductions in puffiness. Clinical data demonstrate a wide range of smoothness and firmness improvements in the eye area. In vitro studies have demonstrated a 50% reduction in vascular permeability at a concentration of 1mg/ml. Voluntary studies of human subjects have shown positive results in both short and long term anti-aging eye care products, and to a large extent we see acetyl tetrapeptide-5 as a true anti-aging agent in all its forms.

Commonly and successfully combined with other peptides, it is a highly effective ingredient to help the skin look and feel younger.
